I recently read Watchmen, despite my initial dislike of the violence inside... I was amazed actually at how great the novel was. It is a grim, but often times true, analysis of humans; aka how greedy, how selfish, and how skittish of the unknown we can be... it also depicts the grotesqueness of crime. Again, GRIM.
But the one character I respect, even though he produces many bloody scenes, is Rorschach. I respect his words, his insight. He was slightly psycho but I don't think it's for naught.
I wanted to share a quote by him, a completely disturbing joke.
"HEARD JOKE ONCE= MAN GOES TO DOCTOR. SAYS HE'S DEPRESSED. SAYS LIFE SEEMS HARSH AND CRUEL.
SAYS HE FEELS ALL ALONE IN A THREATENING WORLD WHERE WHAT LIES AHEAD IS VAGUE AND UNCERTAIN.
DOCTOR SAYS "TREATMENT IS SIMPLE. GREAT CLOWN PAGLIACCI IS IN TOWN TONIGHT. GO AND SEE HIM. THAT SHOULD PICK YOU UP"
MAN BURSTS INTO TEARS. SAYS "BUT DOCTOR... I AM PAGLIACCI"
GOOD JOKE. EVERYBODY LAUGH. ROLL ON SNARE DRUM. CURTAINS."
He also made me think: why are we scared of vigilantes if they truly punish murderers, rapists, burglars? Not condemning or supporting them, but I just was wondering. Like Rorschach, he goes after people who have done horrific things, is that wrong?
